Music Therapy Information Day
And
Fundraising Concert
Music Therapists in Canterbury invite you to a stimulating and fun information day and fundraiser, to be held at Orange St. Music Club, Canterbury, Saturday September 29th.
The day will be packed with workshops and talks about music therapy with a fundraising concert in the evening featuring an eclectic mix of top local bands.
There will be no charge to take part during the day. All proceeds from the evening concert will go towards buying instruments for a local music therapy facility situated within the Music School at St Edmund’s School, Canterbury.
The music therapy suite is named “The Kasra Boutorabi Centre for Music Therapy”. A donation from the Boutorabi family in memory of their son, who was a former pupil, was made for the specific use of a room within the new Music School which was completed in 2004.
The suite is for the use of Qualified Music Therapists to work privately with both adults and children from the local community. It is a self contained space with its own entrance and car parking available and provides an excellent environment for private clients to experience music therapy.
Music therapists work with both adults and children with a variety of needs including communication disorders, learning disabilities, mental health problems, physical difficulties, emotional problems, dementia, bereavement, palliative care and challenging behaviour. Music Therapists work in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, day care centres, mainstream and Special Educational Needs Schools and care homes. There are currently thirteen qualified music therapists working in South East Kent.
In music therapy sessions, interactive music is spontaneously created by the clients and therapists. By establishing a relationship through music, the client can experience and explore new ways of relating, leading to development and change. The therapist also aims to help the client to develop an increased sense of self-awareness, and thereby to enhance his or her quality of life through creative self-expression. Music can be a great motivator and can help to convey feeling without the use of words. The therapy process may take place in individual and group sessions using a range of instruments appropriate to the client.
Music Therapists are musicians who have completed a Postgraduate Graduate training course in Music Therapy and belong to the Health Professions Council (HPC), a regulatory body that maintains professional standards
The music therapy room at St. Edmund’s is an excellent resource but we urgently need a new stock of good quality instruments. The day and evening concert will be of interest to anyone wanting to know more about music therapy, training and practise and wishing to support the work of therapists in the local area. We look forward to meeting you.
For further information about the day or enquiries about Music Therapy at the St. Edmunds Suite, please contact: Iain Spink on: 07866 162576

www.loungeonthefarm.co.uk
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS TO HEADLINE LOUNGE ON THE FARM 2007!
Lounge On The Farm is back this year – and it promises to be bigger and better than 2006. Canterbury festival-going was cornered last year by Lounge On The Farm – a local event that attracted national interest. Featuring a mix of local acts and national names, the festie is back this year – building on the success of 2006, and waving a nonchalant festival flick of the hair at identikit corporate events.
In fact, make that “Ice Hockey Hair” because Lounge On The Farm have just pulled out their biggest coup yet, the confirmation of one of the biggest cult-bands in the world to headline the festival on Friday 13 July - ‘Super Furry Animals.’ Without a doubt the biggest band to play in Canterbury since ‘The Who’ played the University of Kent in 1970, ‘Super Furry Animals’ hit Merton Farm ahead of releasing their latest “speaker blowing” album ‘Hey Venus’ in August on Rough Trade Records, and we can only begin to dream of what surprises they have in store for the people of Kent. Since their debut album ‘Fuzzy Logic’ in 1995, ‘Super Furry Animals’ have continually pushed the boundaries both on record and on stage. From pop-inflected classics such as ‘Golden Retriever’ and ‘Hello Sunshine’, to mind-bending tropicalia and psychedelia such as ‘Juxtaposed With You’ and ‘Laser Beam’ the band have plenty of hits up their sleeves, and they always enthrall and enrapture live, and having headlined all the major festivals, including Reading & Glastonbury in the past 10 years. This is a band, and a booking, guaranteed to blow you away.
Booking acts the calibre of ‘Super Furry Animals’ is an indication of where Lounge On The Farm wants to be. But they’re not just another band, like Lounge On The Farm doesn’t intend on being just another festival. The band and the festival are similar in many ways. Non-conformist, innovative and adored by their public. It’s a bit different, it’s quirky and it’s fun. And it’s also as said before, the biggest thing happening in Kent for many many years...
“The Super Furry Animals are arguably the most inventive, innovative, eclectic, consistent and quite simply bloody fantastic forces that British music has seen in at least the last decade.” - Drowned In Sound
“People say music is going to change the world but it can only be a soundtrack. We wouldn’t cause a revolution, but it would be good background music” - Super Furry Animals

| | Mon 16 Apr 2007 Half Way House Art exhibition |
The exhibition occupies three interconnected buildings, including two deserted terraced houses and a small block of empty flats, linked together with a maze of corridors, doorways and staircases. The nature of the venue allows for a unique set up. The exhibition as a whole forms a linear journey through uncanny and yet familiar spaces.
The work within has be selected and installed in such a way as to draw on the sense of human absence, and the resulting atmosphere left behind. Halfway House displays the talents of eight degree students, each utilising a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, print, collage, sound, film and performance. While each artist brings their own set of ideas and motives to the project, the general function of the show is the questioning of accepted axioms; the re-evaluation of the way we perceive the world around us.
Getting There
The show is located behind the Belgian Café in Ramsgate, near the harbour, and will be signposted from the town centre. This is approximately 20 minutes walk from the train station. The reverse of the flyer printed above contains a map of the location.
Dates and Times
The private view is on Monday 16th April beginning at 8pm and finishing at around 11pm. Following this the exhibition is open from 1pm until 7pm Monday to Saturday, and 1pm until 5pm on Sundays, until the 29th April.

After the summer refurbishment of the OSMC and the extra sound insulation we have installed and the repositioning of the stage we thought it only fair we make every effort to ensure the sound quality is the best possible, for both customers and artists alike.
We have commisioned an acoustic engineer to identify certain areas of the sound quality that can be improved. Anyone at this weeks Eric and the Acoustic Alliance gig will have noticed a dramatic difference in the sound quality and the band enjoyed the modifications.
A full report will be made about the possible modifications so get set for another great improvement to your favourite venue in town.

| | Thu 11 Jan 2007 Stingray Sings... |
Bluesday Tuesday saw a very special guest this week (oh no it didn't). The very talented Sam Bailey & his fantastic band were joined by Ben Nicholas (aka Stingray from Neighbours). This is Ben's second visit to the OSMC after we wowed him with one of our Revolutionary Toasties.
Ben certainly pulled the crowd in & the heaving club was sweating with antisipation & after making people wait just long enough he took to the stage & boy that Panto star can certainly sing. We loved the Rat pack cover however Moondance & Susperstition were especialy lovely. Ben turned on the charm and certainly impressed the mainly Female audience who came in their flustered & camera laden droves to catch a glimpse of the star. Who know what'll be next for Ben with that strong seductive voice, is he gonna be the next Jason? If so can I be Kylie...please?

| | Thu 21 Dec 2006 Farewell For The New Year From a True Local legend Luke Smith ! |
Dear Canterbury,
Putting on my Thursday night show at Orange Street week in and week out for the last two and a half years has been thrilling, comforting, nerve-racking, rewarding, emotional and unforgettable. But I've recently come to the decision to end my residency there as of the beginning of 2007...
...As any one who knows me or listens to my songs will probably be aware, I fear change, so I've found this a very difficult move to make. But really, I just feel I'd like to take things down a peg or two in the new year, to concentrate a bit more on recording, and to just do some slightly more low-key local gigs on a slightly more casual basis, without the pressure of putting on a 'big night' every week. Much as I have loved it.
Having poured a lot of love and energy into every aspect of 'Luke Smith Presents...' from the word go, it's been a great experience for me to watch it grow from those quiet early nights (where I'd sometimes be singing to no more than two or three people sat on a sofa just in front of the stage in an otherwise empty ballroom), to the regular throngs of eighty to a hundred people that it gradually became.
I've been proud to present some very wonderful musical guests too, some of whom have come from far and wide, and all of whom have added to the vibrant and cosy gatherings I've been so glad to share with my beloved home city.
I offer my deep thanks to all who have supported the night over the years, whether as an audience member, or a performer; and also my thanks to the owners of the club (Adam and Stefan, and even Chrissy Hahn in the early days come to that), for allowing me to put on my night there, and for generally putting up with my neurotic ways. Also thanks to the fine and funky bar-staff at the club, who have lent charm and personality to the evenings, and some of whom have even provided the occasional lyrical inspiration.
Thank you one and all.
I'll still be playing around Canterbury so I'll see you all out and about, and who knows, I may well still do some gigs in Orange Street in the new year too, but I'll probably try and give you a chance to miss me a bit first!
Have a cosy Christmas Canterbury.
Lots of love,
Luke Smith.xx
